• Where conferences start early or occur at a great distance, arrival the day prior is expected. It is expected that conference attendees will depart on the same day the conference concludes, unless such is not reasonable. 
• Per diem is calculated by multiplying the number of fundable travel days by the M&IE rate for the travel destination.

• Travel authorization request must be submitted via Concur prior to travel. Failure to obtain travel authorization prior to travel may result in the revocation of award.
• Full disclosure of non-Taft funds received for the proposed project, both inside and outside the university, is required. The award must not duplicate other funds granted for the same purpose, except when a deficit in the project budget is anticipated even with such non-Taft funds. For example, travel award may supplement funds from non-Taft sources in cases where the necessary and reasonable costs exceed the established Taft limits.
• All award funds must be expended exclusively in furtherance of the award and all expenditures of award funds must comply with university policies relating to financial transactions, including the Code of Conduct and, as discussed in the Code of Conduct, the ethics laws of the state of Ohio which prohibit certain private financial interests in university matters. Applications must include a project statement of no more than 10,000 characters (~1,500 words) to include the following:

• An abstract of no more than 150 words; and
• A narrative on the importance of the proposed research project to the field, and the necessity of travel to complete the proposed research project; and
• Budget showing all costs and indicating those Taft is being asked to fund; and
• A report on Taft Research Travel awards received in the last three years.

• An abbreviated (two-page) curriculum vitae; and
• Proof of cost for budgeted items

Applications will be assessed based upon the following criteria and priorities:

• The quality or promise of quality of the applicant's work as a scholar or creative writer and teacher.
• The significance of the contribution that the proposed project will make to thought and knowledge in the field of the project.
• The conceptualization, definition, organization, and description of the proposed project.
• The current state of the research, the proposed schedule, and the timeliness of the award in ensuring the completion of the project.
• The likelihood that the applicant will complete the project.
• Evidence of productivity from previous Taft awards.
• Among the various project types, the committee assigns the highest priority to applications for a specific research project.
• The committee assigns a lower priority to applicants who have not sought funding outside of Taft for their projects or travel expenses.
• The committee assigns a lower priority to applications from prior awardees.
• The committee assigns a higher priority to applications from junior faculty.
• Emeriti may apply but will be given lower priority.

• Travel for Research awards only fund transportation, direct research costs, lodging and M&IE per diem.
